PORTRAITS

SERVING ST GEORGE-WASHINGTON-HURRICANE-SANTA CLARA UT

Another enduring art form is the creation of portraits, which goes back at least 5,000 years to ancient Egypt. Before the invention of photography, it was the only way to record an individual’s appearance.

Portrait creation uses the basic elements of artistic design to replicate the human form. These are:

  • Balance
  • Contrast
  • Dominance
  • Pattern
  • Rhythm
  • Gradation
  • Unity

All of these elements should fit together comfortably to produce a pleasing design. Beginning artists must first learn these design elements, which are initially taught through simple drawings. Portraits can be created in a variety of mediums that include pen and ink, pencil, pastels, acrylics and oils. Once you learn the basics of portrait creation, Jackie enjoys helping you improve your skills even more by encouraging you to include mood, feelings and captured moments through a variety of more advanced techniques.
